Obama's big fat lie

August 04, 2009 10:02 AM

Remember when President George H W Bush raised taxes after uttering these famous campaign words, "Read my lips. No new taxes"? Just as history repeats itself, lying Presidents repeat each other. During his presidential campaign, US President Barack Obama repeatedly pledged "you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime."

Obama's Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is now saying that middle-class taxes might have to go up to pare budget deficits and pay for the proposed overhaul of the nation's health care system. Geithner said, "We’re going to have to do what’s necessary...we have to bring these deficits down very dramatically and that’s going to require some very hard choices."

Geitner rejected Republican criticism that the Obama government is overly involved in the financial system. "Everybody understands that we cannot have our financial system go back to the practices that brought this economy to the brink of collapse. It is going to take fundamental reform." National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers echoed Geitner's tax hike warning on CBS’s Face the Nation. "It is never a good idea to absolutely rule things out, no matter what...The proposed health care overhaul needs funding from somewhere." Congressional Republicans are attacking the prospect of tax hikes and the cost of Democratic health-care proposals.

THE RUST ON OBAMA'S HALO

Obama's capitulation to the AIPAC-style supporters of Israel (many of whom have sought to rev up interest in a US or Israeli assault on Iran), his vote to expand the power of the Bush presidency to spy and eavesdrop on the phone calls of ordinary Americans, his unwillingness to challenge the oil and real-estate speculators or to challenge Wall Street profiteers responsible for the current economic crisis and his "greenlessness" on offshore oil drilling demands.

President Obama's popularity has dropped to its lowest levels as the country's economy continues to struggle, job losses mount and a critical health reform effort has stalled in Congress. What else is dragging down his popularity? The TARP funding, GM bailout, Stimulus funding, cap and trade, the perceived “socialist light”of the healthcare proposal he is trying to quickly pass, the prospect of rising taxes and an unemployment rate that is exceeding 10% this summer. Obama’s programs have created a trillion in deficit just this year alone. Republicans have already termed the 787-billion-dollar stimulus package at the centre of Obama's plans - a failure.

In a U.S. News and World Report Internet poll taken on July 22, 2009, the question was asked, “What Grade would you give Obama in his Presidency so far?” 50.76% of respondents gave him an F-.
