Making Bad News Hilarious

May 14, 2012

America's favorite political comedians, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher and Jay Leno make jokes about immorality and political crimes against humanity...so we don't take it serously.

Their job is to make evil - funny, digestible, palatable and therefore "acceptable". Better to laugh than cry about it, right? Let's laugh about getting screwed, robbed and lied to by Wall Street and government. Let's laugh our asses off about the war atrocities that we finance with our tax dollars.

What passes for a political discussion of serious issues and ideas in American politics has been reduced to comedy or a verbal pie throwing contest that is interupted by endless commercials. Creeping into our daily TV News Hour is tabloid Hollywood celeb news and sports celeb news about who got cut or who got caught.

Who's responsible for the trivialization of American politics and news stories? The villains are the media empires and the enormous infusion of advertising billions from corporations and from legions of lobbyists who have played a stellar role in the decline of American politics, morality and discourse...but they are not alone.

Who else is responsible? We all are. It's our tolerance, apathy, lack of initiative, our consumption of political lies and our unwillingness to challenge the lunatic fringe that is running our nation.

Worst of all is our willingness to laugh out loud when Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher and Jay Leno joke about political horror stories so we don't take it seriously.

Howard Zinn once warned that, "If those in charge of our society - politicians, corporate executives, and owners of press and television - can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." His prophecy is fast becoming our nightmare.   Ha. Ha. Ha.
