Military Spidermen - Watch Out!

Thanks to a new invention, the police, SWAT teams and commandos can now climb straight up the walls of your apartment building or house. No ropes or hooks needed.

The spiderman suit was built by a team of Utah University engineering undergrads who out-competed teams from 16 other universities to win the Air Force Research Laboratory's annual Design Challenge, earning $50,000 in grant money and a chance to win double that. All for what they call a "Vertical Ascender," which can haul at least 300 pounds.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The suit works with vacuum powered wall-crawlers. Each Ascender is battery-powered and "designed to operate for about 30 minutes".The heart of the Ascender is actually its lungs. Tubes extending from the "Personnel Vacuum Assisted Climber" to pads the size of dinner plates, worn over the hands, provide sufficient suction to get 300 pounds' worth of commando over the wall. The drawback? The spiderman suit is deafeningly noisy and would alert any adversary on the other side of the wall.

SUPERHERO DEVICE OR POLICE STATE DEVICE?

One thing we know about the student inventors of the Spiderman Suit. They're NOT members of the Occupy Movement and NOT very street smart. They eagerly call the Vertical Ascender a "superhero" device, and are playing up the Spider-Man parallel. The military loves superheroes. Exoskeletons are named after the Hulk, and the Air Force has a "human chassis" for commandos named after Batman.

The Spiderman Suit is another addition to the arsenal of weaponry that can be used by the 1% to capture, scare and subdue the protesting 99% both nationally and internationally. Standard crowd control weaponry is tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, electric tasers, Long Range Acoustic Devices, water cannons, armoured fighting vehicles, police dogs or mounted police on horseback.
