Rape and Racism: Banning Gone With the Wind

WHITE GUILT AND FEAR

Centuries of black slavery ended in the U.S. in 1865 with the Emancipation Proclamation and the passage of the 13th amendment to the constitution...but...white fear, guilt and shame survive to this day.

The white plantation owners who bought and shipped African slaves to America justified it with the belief that blacks were inferior human beings akin to monkeys and gorillas. That rationalization permeated slave-owning American culture for the next four centuries. Today, white fear is born from ancestral guilt...and many of the established symbols - from statues to movies - are being dismantled, defaced or destroyed without white resistance. The truth is - many white Americans believe that black and brown people are intrinsically dangerous.

GONE WITH THE WIND SUPPORTS RAPE AND RACISM

"Gone With the Wind", the highest-grossing movie in cinema history, hit the chopping block when HBO Max announced that it would be pulling it from its streaming service. It was pulled because it deceptively portrays white slave owners as gentler and kinder than they actually were...but there's another OVERLOOKED reason why it must be pulled. Rhet Butler (Clark Gable), the movie hero and male role model, presses his hands against Scarlet's head in a vice-like grip and threatens to smash her skull like a walnut before carrying her to the bedroom against her will and raping her. In the next scene, Scarlet is in bed with a glowing smile of sexual satisfaction.

A spokesperson from HBO Max said the film was "a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society...These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today." The spokesperson FAILED to mention that sexism, violence against women and rape were wrong then and are wrong today.
